The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Regional Office for North America (RONA) in Washington DC in October 2000. It is one of six regional offices that make up UNEP's Division of Regional Cooperation. The office works with the governments and civil society organizations of Canada and the United States to (a) promote effective responses to international environmental challenges, and (b) to foster cooperation on environmental issues between North America and the broader international community. RONA, in partnership with various public- and private-sector organizations, addresses environmental problems like global climate change, land-based sources of marine pollution, toxic chemicals and hazardous wastes, sustainable production and consumption, and land and natural resource degradation.
