OneDrive for Mac Updates

Mac users running the latest version of macOS 10.14 Mojave will have another good reason to be happy about their Office 365 service today.  Microsoft has released to production one of OneDrive’s most useful features, Files On-Demand.  This feature was first announced at Microsoft’s Ignite 2018 conference and now it’s finally ready for consumer use.

Files On-Demand is a feature that allows you to access all of your personal and work OneDrive files from Finder without consuming all of your local storage.  Microsoft describes this as “… an intelligent connection to the cloud” that further increase the power and convenience of Office 365.

So, how does this feature work? The answer is that it works exactly the same way that it works on Windows 10.  New files created online or on another device appear as online-only files, which don’t take up any space on your device.  When you are connected to the internet, you will have the option of downloading the file and using it just like any other file on your device.

Another bit of Mac related, Office 365 news was also released today.  Microsoft will be ending OneDrive client support for Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Mac OS El Capitan 10.11. It is recommended that users upgrade their machines to OS X 10.12 or above before February 1st, 2019 to ensure OneDrive client functionality.  I recommend updating to macOS Mojave 10.14 for the best experience and to take advantage of the new Files On-Demand feature that was recently released.
