Office 365 Updates for the Week of June 10

  • Microsoft Teams continues to improve. Like many popular messaging you will soon be able to prioritize chat messages. This feature allows a user to mark a chat message in Teams as “Urgent”. Unlike regular “important” messages, Urgent Messages (aka “priority notifications”) notify users repeatedly for a period of 20 minutes or until messages are picked up and read by the recipient, maximizing the likelihood that the message is picked up and acted upon in a timely manner.  Look for this feature to begin rolling out in July.
  • Do you or your clients use Yammer and use the service to share files?  Well, Microsoft is implementing a change in where the files will be stored. Beginning in mid-June all new files posted in connected Yammer groups will now be stored in SharePoint. Existing files, files in unconnected groups, and files in private message will not be impacted by this change and will continue to be stored in the legacy location. Now, there are a couple things user will need to check to be able to take advantage of this new functionality:
    • Ensure your users are on Yammer versions later than the following: iOS - 7.33.0, Android - 5.5.84 Windows and Mac - 3.4.2
    • Ensure your users have 3rd Party Cookies (all browsers) and Security Zone settings (IE and Edge) enabled on their browsers
  • Password protected “Anyone” share links.  This new update will make every Office 365 Administrator rest a little easier. We have many clients that have the “Share with Anyone” option enabled because it's easier to share with external users. Now, when users share documents via links that work for Anyone, they can now require recipients to enter a custom password as well. Users who don't have the password will be unable to use the sharing link to access content. Note that for maximum security, the password should be communicated separately from the sharing link itself.
  • End of Life notification:  Support for office apps for Android 4.x and 5.x will be ending on June 30, 2019.
