Office 365 Updates for the Week of March 8th

WolfPack, this week Microsoft will be introducing several new updates for Office 365.  These updates include OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams.

OneDrive New Feature: Sync Version History.  Soon, both Windows and Mac users will now be able to view and restore previous versions of their files directly in the desktop by using File Explorer or Mac Finder.
So how will this work?  Users will see a new entry in the context menu in Finder, File Explorer, and OneDrive Activity Feed.

First release clients can expect this feature to be available beginning in mid-March with this feature available to all users by the end of March.

SharePoint New Feature – Multilingual Publishing for Modern: This feature will allow for site owners to enable the publishing and consumption of pages and news in multiple languages in a modern SharePoint communication site.  This is a purely optional feature.

Site owners will see a new experience in the language settings page under site settings.  They will also be able to assign translators per language.  Translators get notified by email when there is a new default language page created or when an existing one is updated.  Translators are responsible for adding their language’s content.

Site visitors will automatically see pages in their preferred user language.  Below is the experience for site visitors:

Some notes about this updated feature:
  • Page translation features are available on communication sites only
  • Pages are not translated automatically
  • Changes to the original page are not automatically synced to the translated page.  Translated pages must be updated manually
  •  The language displayed to the user will depend on the personal language and region settings

Site owners will have access to the feature soon.  Microsoft will be gradually rolling out this feature to targeted release customers first beginning by the end of March. 2020.  All site owners will have access by the end of May 2020.

SharePoint New Feature – Edit Metadata: Users will soon be able to edit metadata in a file or list directly from the document or list view web part.  User no longer need to navigate to the List or Document Library to update their metadata.  They can edit metadata directly from the webpart by clicking “More” under item properties.

This feature will be available first to Targeted Release users beginning in early March, all others will have it by the end of April.

Teams Updated Feature: Teams @team and @channel features have recently been localized and now Microsoft is updating Microsoft Teams to support both localized and English use.
Look for this feature to be available to all users by the end of March

Teams New Feature:  Teams Admins will soon be allowed to pre-install Apps that will be visible when a user clicks the ellipses (…) on the left rail of the Teams desktop app.
Teams Admins and Owners already had the ability to pre-pin apps for users.  Now Microsoft is adding the ability to pre-install apps that users will see immediately when they click on the ellipses on the left rail of the Teams client.

**Note** When you install the app for users, they will not be able to uninstall the app.  You will need to remove it from the list of Installed Apps in the Setup policy.
