SharePoint Online - You can now change the URL of a SharePoint site

With this new capability administrators will be able to update the URL for:

  • Classic team sites
  • Communication sites
  • Modern team sites that do not belong to an Office 365 group
  • Office 365 group-connected team sites

You cannot change the URL of the root SharePoint site. For example: https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com.

A SharePoint administrator will need to access the SharePoint administration portal to update a site’s URL.  From there, select the site that you wish to update

On the Edit flyout blade on the right, you will see the Edit option for the URL.

When you hit the Edit option the Admin will be asked to set the new URL.  O365 will automatically check to see if the URL is available.

After you change the URL, the Admin will be asked If they want to change the site name at the same time

Then the magic happens.  O365 will update the URL and generate redirects to redirect all access from the previous URL to the new one

Once the process is complete, the new URL will be displayed

The new URL is active and the user is redirected transparently without any messages displayed to the user.
